You will never forget the pain of wearing the wrong shoes during a workout. Whether you got terrible blisters on a practice run, sore nails after hitting the front of your shoes during a high-intensity boot camp class, or struggling to keep up during a class indoor cycling because your feet have lost circulation, having the right training shoes can make or break your workout.

Take a look at the best athletic shoes right now:

“Women typically wear a size a half to a size smaller than their actual foot size,” says Mark Mendeszoon, DPM, board-certified podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon at Precision Orthopedic Specialties in Chardon, Ohio, and owner of Achilles Running Shops.

Why? Feet usually swell in the afternoon (after standing all day), and that may not come into play when you first buy your training shoes. He also adds that feet get bigger with age as well as during and after pregnancy. So your proven size may not always be. (Pro tip: try on new sneakers in the afternoon to find shoes that will fit your feet properly.)

Whatever your favorite way to sweat it out, there’s a shoe that’s perfect for Cinderella. Ready to go shopping?

What to look for in sports shoes

All the fancy features impact your workouts. Proprietary foam, gel and knit components can help you avoid injuries and even improve your performance.

For example, look for shoes with support and cushioning to balance impact (jumping, running in place, and lateral movement) in studio classes. “It’s important that the shoes fit well and provide comfort and support, and they also have good side bolsters, are lightweight and have a good pivot point on the forefoot sole,” says Dr. Mendeszoon.

Or, if loading in the weight room is your priority, you need shoes that create a stable base. This means zero drop or a flat sole, according to Dr. Mendeszoon. “Many lifting activities require the feet to be intimate with the floor so that stability, support, and dynamic mobility can be provided,” he says. “The shoes should be very light and responsive.”
