Auction houses have gambled on the sneakers in recent years as they seek to capitalize on the fervor that has created a $ 6 billion global resale market. As a result, some legitimate gems went up for sale, including the world’s first ever “Air Yeezy” Nike and a pair of Air Jordan 1s worn and signed by Michael himself.
A gold rush can also lead to more curious decisions, and we can’t help but scratch our heads at the last auction that caught our eye. The Air Jordan 2 Retros that Bill Murray wore during in-game scenes in Space jam opened for auction through an auction house specializing in Hollywood memorabilia.
Unless you’re particularly drawn to what’s going on on people’s feet, you might never have realized Murray even wore Jordans in the movie. The Air Jordan 2s on hand are less something people have coveted before and more like something that suddenly (and temporarily) catches the attention of a dog sticking its head out the window. And someone likely to indulge in such a spontaneous whim will indeed shell out a sizable amount of money for the kicks, as the highest bid is already $ 15,000.
Let’s put this number into perspective – If you are a sneaker fan, the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Space jamIs the Air Jordan 11 that Michael wore for the movie. Nike only released the sneaker to the public in 2001, and it took another nine long years for it to be reissued. This second gap made Space jam Jordans one of the most anticipated sneakers for almost a decade, but it also wasn’t exactly the real thing.
Five pairs of Air Jordan 11s were made for the film, and they featured Concord Purple accents instead of the released Varsity Royal. An unused, or unworn, pair sold for just $ 11,100 on eBay in 2004. Another pair that Jordan wore while filming also hit eBay around the same time, and its history is part of the tradition of the sneakers. Throughout the story, Jordan’s stylist for the film kept the pair and traded them with the prospective seller for a Honda Civic.
Obviously, the sneaker landscape has changed dramatically over the past two decades. No one would think Bill Murray’s Air Jordan 2s were more valuable than the original Space Jam Jordan 11s, and looking back, the prices charged for the latter were a steal.
More on Murray’s Js – The Air Jordan 2 “worn on stage” are a size 11 and come with the original box. The sale also includes a pair of white socks and a red Acme Clothing t-shirt featuring Bugs Bunny and the Tasmanian Devil that Murray wore under his Toon Squad jersey.
There is no end date listed for the auction, which you can find here, and it will be interesting to see what the final sale price will be. And for the few people who own the OG Space jam Jordans, maybe now is the time to turn them over for what should be a nice profit.
