Mthe new superhero from arvel studios, Shang Chiarrived on the scene triumphantly and saved the world in style, and now film star Simu Liu explains why his character wore Air Jordans.
In addition to Shang-Chi’s fantastic martial arts skills, viewers couldn’t help but notice his choice of footwear throughout the film. Speak with mereverseLiu, an acclaimed sneakerhead in his own right, reveals he initially wasn’t okay with Shang-Chi doing his superhero thing in a pair of basketball kicks, but got is finally warmed to the idea.
“I fought against it at first,” Liu said. Reverse“I remember doing the costume fitting and saying, ‘Is he the first superhero to wear running shoes? 2015 Avengers: Age of Ultron wore silver adidas. “He should be wearing combat boots or something. I didn’t see it as they saw it.
“When we went into production, I was like, Oh, that’s actually really cool“, said Liu. “It makes it accessible.
Liu didn’t lie, because in the film, an epic showdown between Shang-Chi and his evil father, Wenwu (Tony Leung), not only do the legendary Ten Rings take center stage, but Shang’s Jordan Access sneakers -Chi stand out. The sneaker colorway is a perfect complement to Shang-Chi’s superhero drip. It features a black and red top specially designed by Shang Chi’s mother and passed down to him by his aunt in the film made from the magical scales of the Great Guardian Dragon.
Marvel’s concept designer went into more detail about why they opted for a pair of Jordan Brand sneakers, stating that they went through many designs but opted for the kicks because they tell a story. Park broke down Reverse that Shang Chi’s costume is a combination of things passed down from his mother and father, so they wanted to give him something that belonged to him.
“Every time we design a costume, we try to tell a story of that character,” Park explains. “The Dragon [armor] symbolizes Shang-Chi’s mother. The Ten Rings are given to him by his father. He is a product of his mother and father. But he is also a product of his time in America.
“I wanted to give him a room that was his only,” Park continued. “That’s why I added the shoes, to have something western of its own. It’s his story. You see it on his costume.
In the sequel and the future Avenger movies, we hope Shang Chi will get an upgrade to some Jordan 1s. He deserves a pair.
