STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) – Hundreds of people gathered at a Minnesota golf course at dusk to remember a 17-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed while on a recreational tubing trip down a Wisconsin river.
His family and friends said Isaac Schuman enjoyed many things, including golf. Many of those who came out for Wednesday’s candlelight vigil at the Oak Glen golf course in Stillwater wore orange, the teenager’s favorite color.
Friends from Stillwater High School, where Schuman was to be a senior this year, were among the approximately 500 people present at the vigil. They described the teenager as kind and compassionate.
Schuman was part of a tubing group on the Apple River in St. Croix County, western Wisconsin on Saturday when a confrontation arose with a man who faces criminal charges in following the meeting. Schuman was killed and four others from his group were injured.
His brother, Jake Schuman, spoke at the rally and thanked his brother for “the best 17 years of our lives”.
He told the crowd that he hoped they would keep Isaac’s spirit with them and love others like his brother had.
“Answer a phone call, answer a text, go see someone,” he said. “Because life is too short.”
Isaac’s mother, Alina Hernandez, said everyone who knew her son “knew the power of his presence,” the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.
“He’s all good, kind, generous and forgiving,” she said. “He had a style all his own, an incredible work ethic and a smile that he shared as well. I know Isaac can’t physically come back to me, but with his spirit, I will always feel him with me. I pray daily that he will guide me to forgive, to have his kindness, tender heart and generous spirit of love and patience.
Nicolae Miu, 52, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, was charged Monday with first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Witnesses told authorities that Miu disturbed young women and girls who were tubing in the river while wearing a snorkel mask.
Miu told investigators he was trying to defend himself after being attacked while looking for a lost cellphone.
