For better or for worse, Michael Jordan has always made his own game (see: “Space Jam”, his Nike commercials with Mars Blackmon, etc.). That apparently still hasn’t changed despite an award-winning actor’s best efforts.
Appearing this week on an episode of Complex’s “Sneaker Shopping,” actor Idris Elba revealed he once approached Jordan about portraying His Airness in a movie, but was turned down.
“I even said to [Jordan] once, “I want to play you,” Elba said. “He was like, ‘Hmmm, I’m not ready yet.’ That’s what he said. ‘I’m not ready yet.’ I was very serious.
“In my head, playing Jordan wouldn’t be about the basketball player,” Elba added. “It was about the businessman. He’s a very astute, very intelligent businessman… So that’s what I was referring to. I was like, ‘I want to play Jordan. I do that.’ He was like, ‘Ah, I’m not ready for this story yet.'”
Elba wouldn’t be a bad choice to play Jordan. He’s won numerous awards during his acting career (including the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards) and isn’t too far behind Jordan in terms of age (49 compared to Jordan’s 59).
But we know Jordan likes to be in control of his own narrative and already had a 2020 documentary series where he was able to do that on ESPN’s “The Last Dance.” So, Jordan seems to be focused on other endeavors right now (like this possible power move for his Charlotte Hornets) rather than a possible film collaboration in which Elba would portray him.
