If you happen to have kicks worn by Michael Jordan himself in your collection, you are sitting on millions. On Sunday, October 24, a pair of GOAT-rocked Air Ships in one of its first NBA games sold for $ 1.47 million.

The auction was handled by Sotheby’s – now clearly the supplier of the million dollar kicks – at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Bloomberg reports that the buyer was Nick Fiorella, who is described as “a high-end card collector.” He’s a cardholder with lots of banks.

Apparently the kicks were only carried in Game 5 (November 1, 1984) of Michael Jordan’s career. Sneakersheads will recognize the white and red shoe not as its signature Air Jordan 1 model first released to the public in 1985, but as the Nike Air Ship model.

The shoe sold today has been touted as “the most valuable sneaker ever offered at auction” and is expected to sell for between $ 1 million and $ 1.5 million, which was clearly the right place.

“Michael Jordan and the Jordan brand have helped redefine what a signature line could be formed around an athlete. These sneakers are a crucial part of the genesis of this story, ”Brahm Wachter, head of Sotheby’s Streetwear and Modern Collectables, said in a statement. This pair, from Michael’s 5th NBA Game, really touches two worlds, as the Nike Air Ship holds a special place in the hearts of sneakerheads as the precursor to the Air Jordan 1, but beyond that is also quite simply an incredible artifact that dates back to the start of Michael Jordan’s rookie season. We are delighted to unveil this amazing piece worn by one of the best athletes to play any sport, as Sotheby’s continues to lead the market modern sneakers and collectibles.

Interestingly, today’s sale isn’t the most expensive sneaker up for auction. This distinction goes to another sale negotiated by Sotheby’s of Kanye West’s Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototype which was purchased by the RARE sneakers investment app. Hip-Hop Wired recently interviewed RARES Founder and CEO Gerome Sapp, who has long viewed sneakers as a viable and valuable asset class.
