Nike taps footballing legends old and new for World Cup campaign

marvel’s Avengers: Endgame sets the standard for multiversal shenanigans in modern media, bringing together its full catalog of cinematic characters for one cinematic spectacle. Many have since followed suit, bringing fan fantasies to life across franchises. However, one brand you might not expect to delve into the multiverse is Nike, who have pulled out all the stops for their World Cup campaign.

Whether we know it or not, we were all plugged into the multiverse growing up. Grab your favorite action figures from vastly different universes to battle – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles against Superman, Goku against Action Man, the possibilities were endless.

The same goes for sports; we always wonder who would win in a fight between Mike Tyson and Tyson Fury, what LeBron James would look like against Michael Jordan, or who is the greatest striker of all time. We just can’t help it, and that way of thinking is exactly what Nike tapped into ahead of the World Cup.

In welcoming us to the “Footballverse”, Nike asks the questions we’ve all been thinking about. Is Mbappé better than Ronaldhinio 2006? What would happen if the old CR7 was linked to the new CR7? more importantly, who is the best Ronaldo?

Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Folden, Leah Williamson, Carli Lloyd, Sam Kerr, Shane Kluivert, Edgar Davids, Alex Morgan and Virgil Van Djik all feature in the playful video which sees Nike become the real life equivalent of Space Jam.

While it doesn’t provide any answers, it’s certainly a lot of fun and offers a more competitive approach than adidas’ first family World Cup campaign.
