Editor’s notes: If anyone has a monopoly on iconic skate silhouettes, it has to be Vans, right? While he doesn’t literally have a hold on this cultural space, his silhouettes and brand are so deeply ingrained, alongside Nike SB’s Dunks or Blazers, that it almost feels like you can’t speak skateboard without mentioning Vans at least once.
Instantly recognizable as one of the brand’s most recognizable and iconic silhouettes, the Sk8-Hi has stood the test of time, remaining one of the most beloved skate sneakers of all time. That being said, his adoration goes far beyond skateboarding, with his classic white-on-black rendering being one of the most frequently seen shoes on Tumblr during his mid-2010s heyday.
It feels like almost everyone has taken to the silhouette whether or not they’ve been able to decipher it on a case-by-case basis, but for the most part it’s pretty hard to screw up a Sk8 -Hi.
Perhaps its beauty is rooted in its classic form – why would you drastically alter it? This is the kind of thinking that results in the version we get from Slam Jam. It goes heavy on punk, changing the attitude of the silhouette, but goes even further to highlight what makes it such a popular sneaker.
Featured as a twist on the shoe’s classic palette, the medial sides are reversed as opposed to the lateral sides, creating a Two-Face-like profile that’s accented with red-on-black typographic laces, a printed outsole design and upside A branding on the heel.
