The night of April 17, 1991 was an eventful night for the burgeoning Seattle scene. Alice in Chains was shooting scenes for their contribution to what would become a cult movie, Singles. Meanwhile, Nirvana gave a concert at the nearby OK Hotel, giving the stratospheric future Smells Like Teen Spirit its first live unveiling.

Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron were in attendance at the OK Hotel that evening, and the Soundgarden drummer recently shared how he was honored to become Kurt Cobain’s impromptu guitar technician at the concert, while also recounting his memories. of Dave Grohl’s drums.

In an interview with the Seattle Podcast Today, former Soundgarden drummer / current Pearl Jam said, “We heard about that OK Hotel gig with Nirvana – with Dave. I think it was his second or third gig here in Seattle with Nirvana, c ‘was maybe her first gig, I don’t I don’t know. So anyway, we went down the alley behind the OK, knocked on the door and Krist [Novoselic] was there so he let us in.

“There was a point when Kurt – I didn’t know him very well, but we were definitely familiar, knowledge and stuff – but he broke his guitar string. [while playing] and he handed me the guitar and said, “Change my guitar string!” “

“There was this Scooby-Doo lunchbox with, like, some wrapped guitar strings. I don’t know which string I had to change. So I started to change his string, like, ‘I don’t know which string goes. on what a thing here! “. Then someone walked in and finished the job for me, luckily. But it was cool, ‘Change my channel!’. ‘It’s with pleasure, sir! My pleasure.’ It was an honor.

“They are still great guys. I remember seeing them on a Tuesday show on Vogue with Chad and all. Kim and I were there, and Kurt came over and introduced himself, we had heard Love Buzz and I loved it. I think there’s a picture of Kurt with a Soundgarden sticker on his guitar. I heard he really liked Screaming Life, our debut album, so that’s cool. ”

Cameron also continues to share his memory of Dave Grohl on the show. “I watched Dave play, I was just amazed at his crazy power. How tight he was and the tempos were perfect. But he had that disgusting plastic water pitcher right next to his left foot. had this drumstick sawdust in it and the container was really dirty.

“Then he had these disgusting hiking socks, like woolen hiking socks, and I think he had Converse on. It was like, ‘This is the worst combination of drum shoes I’ve ever had. view of my life! ‘. But he was just hammering, and he would drink that disgusting sawdust water … but that was all there was, you know? ”

Meanwhile, Cameron was recently featured among a cast of 100 other drummers performing a cover of The Beatles Come Together for the benefit of WhyHunger.
