But even years after his retirement, sports fans are dying to get a glimpse of his life and career. ESPN gave fans just that with the recent release of “The Last Dance,” a 10-part documentary series about the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls.

While the documentary centers on the team’s final championship run, it largely focuses on the length of Michael Jordan’s career, including highlights like his mother forcing him to take a meeting at Nike. , his five previous championship wins, his short stint in baseball, and more.

There are two main takeaways from the docuseries. First, in addition to Jordan’s natural talents, he had an unrelenting will to win and an unparalleled level of determination, which is admirable for anyone who has ever wanted to achieve anything. The second is that his sneakers and gear on and off the court were always cool.



Naturally, the documentary is filled with Nike and Jordan Brand product placements, which had a major impact on the popularity and sales of Air Jordans and other Jordan-related memorabilia.

According to recent data collected by the online market eBay, site buyers searched for Michael Jordan at an average of 821 queries per minute on April 19, the day of the premiere. In the days that followed, average one-day sales for Chicago Bulls merchandise soared 5,156% from their early April average.

Also in April, eBay sold 364 Fleer Michael Jordan 1986-87 rookie cards for a total of $1.62 million, up 150% from March.

Not only has the search for and sales of Jordan-related memorabilia increased, but the value of the items has also increased. According to Jesse Einhorn, senior economist at StockX, the stock market-like site saw an average 13% increase in resale prices for all Jordan Brand sneakers. One of the biggest value gains belonged to the “Chicago” Air Jordan 1, a sneaker that was heavily featured in Episode 5 of “The Last Dance.” It retailed for around $900 when the series started and prices have skyrocketed ever since. Over the past 10 days, the average resale price has exceeded $1,400, an increase of more than 50% from the previous month.

In addition to sneakers and trading cards, consumers purchased jerseys, signed memorabilia and other collectibles.
